What to Do After a Car Accident in California

A car accident is disorienting. Adrenaline, shock, and damage to your vehicle make it easy to skip steps that later matter for your health and your injury claim. If you were hurt anywhere in California, this checklist helps you protect both.

At the Scene

1. Call 911 if anyone is injured or traffic is blocked.
2. Get medical care — accept EMS transport if offered, even if you feel "fine."
3. Document the scene — photos of vehicles, damage, road conditions, skid marks, and traffic controls.
4. Exchange information — names, phone numbers, insurance, license plate, and driver's license (do not argue fault at the scene).
5. Identify witnesses — names and phone numbers before they leave.

In the First 24–72 Hours

• Follow up with a doctor even if the ER cleared you — soft tissue injuries often appear later.
• Report the crash to your insurer, but do not give a recorded statement to the at-fault driver's insurer without legal advice.
